Question by Donna: Should dogs eat tomatoes? Or peppers?
Whenever I’m making food, my dog likes to sit in the kitchen and watch me, especially when I’m chopping up vegetables.
Whenever I’m chopping up a green bell pepper I always toss down little pieces of the pepper for him to eat (not without telling him to do a trick).
He also begs every time I’m chopping up tomatoes for the burritos that I make. I always give him a little chunk or two (not big at all) and he eats it.
Well, I made burritos last night, and as usual, I gave him a tiny piece of tomato. He wolfed it down, but then this morning I found poop all over the floor, which isn’t normal for him. He’s also just been laying around all day and farting a whole lot, and hasn’t greeted anyone.
Normally in the morning whenever anyone wakes up, he runs to greet them and jumps up, but not this morning.
I don’t know if it’s something I fed him, or if maybe he just got to some beans in the trash.

If he got beans in the trash, then that is most likely the reason he pooped and has been farting. Just in case, no more tomatoes for him. The tomatoes could have upset his stomach. Carrots are great for dogs, and they usually like them. If you feel tempted to give him a veggie, toss him a piece of carrot!

  1. Peppers are okay for dogs,
tomatos are okay as long as they are red. Never feed your dog any part of a tomato that is still green, tomato, leaves, stem…

Green tomato parts contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems.

Here is a site that tells you most all you cannot feed a dog and why.

  2. You should be careful of what ‘people food’ you give your dog. someone said carrots, which are fine, but have no nutritional value for your dog. In moderation most anything is usually okay, but some foods dogs cannot handle at all. If you want a list of things go to http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1661&articleid=1030 and take a look. It probably wasn’t the tomatoes, and if you are suspicious he got in your trash and got something from there you should figure out a way to prevent him getting at it. your dog just wants to eat, he doesn’t know what is bad for him. If he doesn’t get better you might consider calling your vet on monday.

  3. OMJ do not i repeat do not feed a dog tomatos(or rasians) that can make them passaway. its true, my vet told me! peppers i dont know?
