Question by sandiemaye: What’s wrong with my tomato plants?
The smaller branches have turned brown and dried up. However, there are still tomatoes growing on the plants–but hardly any leaves! What’s happening?

Here is my opinion of what’s happening:

The first problem that it could be is lack of water. The smaller leaves and branches are newer than the original stalk or large branches, so they require a lot of water. When there is not enough water, part of the plant will die, which will be the smaller branches and leaves first.
The temperature could also be another problem. If the weather is too hot or two cold, the plant will begin to die because it does not have the optimum weather that it needs. Tomatoes will still be on the vines, but may begin to rot or fall of the branches.
Just make sure that the plant gets plenty of water. It is not really necessary to remove the dead branches and leaves because if there is enough of them, they will provide shade for other branches and leaves. (if the weather is extremely hot).
Good luck!

  1. Sounds more like Verticillium or Fusarium Wilt. If you have had alot of humidity, have sometimes neglected to sufficiently water the tomato plants or have watered on top of the plants, symptoms of these wilts will be severe. Symptoms always show up when the plant is fruiting.
Additionally, do not compost these plants or you will spread the wilt. Before you plant next year, solarize your soil to kill off these organisms. Refer to the site below for instructions. good luck
