Question by Jo: What can i use to substitute canned whole tomatoes in puree?
Lentil-tomato sauce recipe with spaghetti
the recipe also calls for carrots, onions as for the vegetables…
the recipe says I have to crush the whole tomatoes with my hands/a spoon and then add the entire content including the puree and the personally crushed tomatoes.

But I can’t find canned whole tomatoes in puree at the store… What can I substitute for this ingredient?

They probably mean when you crush the whole tomatoes, The puree, is the juice you get with it.That would be my thought.I am a good cook & never seen puree, in with tomatoes in the can. You can get puree in can by itself, if you want to make your sauce thicker, because by itself it will bee some what thin. If you don’t want to cut veggies up buy them frozen. If you like garlic you can chop fresh cloves, or buy them in the jar, over in produce isle on shelf under produce stands in center in area.If you like roasted red peppers, you can buy those in a jar & add them. in any recipes, add something special of your own, to make it yours. Don’t forget seasonings, & herbs if you like them.

  1. Diced tomatoes should work as well. I would grab a small can of tomato paste as well, just in case the flavor/texture isn’t quite as you imagined. If you don’t use it it’s bound to work for something else you make.

  2. Just mash the tomatoes in mixer grinder and have the puree.
Or put the tomatoes in hot water for 5-10 mints and peel it of and then mash these.

  3. 1
Buy or pick your tomatoes. You will need a lot of tomatoes. For example, one 28-oz. can of peeled whole tomatoes equals 10 to 12 tomatoes; a 14-oz. can equals five to six tomatoes. Rinse tomatoes in cold water to clean off any dirt or debris.

    2
Boil a very large pot of water. Add the tomatoes to the water. Boil the tomatoes for a maximum of one minute.

Drain the tomatoes into a colander, then transfer them to a pot or bowl filled with ice water. This will allow the tomato peels to come off easily. This step is essential because leaving the skins on would make the tomatoes tough and chewy.

Cut the tomatoes in half and remove the seeds and excess liquid. Rinse well. Squeeze the tomatoes to remove additional liquid. The volume of tomatoes you have now will be significantly less than when you began.

Use tomatoes to make sauce or salsa, according to recipe or directions that called for canned tomatoes.

  4. You can make your own tomato puree with fresh tomatoes and tomato sauce. Otherwise I am sure you will find tomatoes it in a carton if they don’t have any canned
