That does happen if they grow too fast. Try watering more often if you water infrequently, or less often if you water all the time.

  1. Probably too much water in too short a time. This has been asked and answered on Yahoo!Answers before. Even if you do not over-water the plants, they may be getting too much water from the soil. If it’s serious enough, consider putting in a dry well near the garden. You might find you have higher groundwater than you thought. Or move the garden to a dryer spot.

  2. Splitting is usually caused either by irregular watering or by over watering during periods of rapid growth. If your tomatoes have gone through a dry spell and you try to make up for it with frequent waterings, the inside of the tomato will plump up faster than the outside can stretch and grow. As a result the outer skin of the tomato splits open or cracks.

A heavy rain or a jolt of irrigation when produce is ripening can also cause it to split.

You can prevent splitting by watering them on a regular schedule & by mulching around the tomato plants to maintain ground moisture, Pick damaged tomatoes right away & cut off the part where it’s split.

For future plantings, keep in mind that some varieties are more prone to splitting than others, & plant varieties that are resistant to cracking.
    Good luck! Hope this helps.

  3. not enough water

  4. too much water at once
the swelling is faster than the growth
you are having rain or are irrigating too much
