Do you use the juice in diced tomatoes and kidney beans when making chili or drain it?

Best answer:

Answer by James G
from the can… no.. drain first

If you are slow cooking then plenty of moisture is added to the chili, and if you are not slow cooking I think you get a better flavor by using a bit of stock instead

  1. I use it all

  2. I make several different type of “chili” type meals and I always use the juice. I’ll tell you why… when you make a chili, you are usually cooking it for a while to get the meat really nice and tender, while this is happening you not only want all your flavors incorporated but moisture tends to reduce, I usually end up adding a little beef stock or water through out the process as well.

  3. I use all the tomato juice and I rinse and drain the beans.

It’s fine to use the bean liquid too. I don’t because I think it makes the chili to sweet.

  4. I use all the juice in canned tomatoes but I always rinse kidney beans – and you must rinse kidney beans before using to remove salt, calcium chloride and disodium EDTA or whatever else they have put in them to preserve isn’t going to be very tasty.

  5. Use the juice in Both. I know a lot of people will say to drain the juice/liquid from the beans but add to to the chili. It has flavor and adds body.

  6. If you drain diced tomatoes there wouldn’t be much left really, plum tomatoes fair enough if you wanted to but it’s tomato juice and the liquid is good in chili. As for kidney beans I prefer the soak overnight variety myself – they are cheaper, healthier for you and more environmentally friendly, they don’t contain all that gunk and salt that is in the can – rinsing will remove some but not all of it.
