Hi, this is the old fashioned way to make tomato soup.

1 can (46 oz.) tomato juice
1 can (8 oz.) tomato sauce
3 beef bouillon cubes
1/2 cup boiling water
3 peppercorns
1/2 bay leaf
1/4 tsp. leaf basil
1/2 small onion, thinly sliced
3 tbls. sugar
2 whole cloves
1 tbls. chopped celery leaves

Stir all ingredients together in pot. Cover and cook on low.
If thicker soup is desired, turn to high setting and remove lid for the last 1/2 hour of cooking.
Strain before serving.
6 servings (about 1 1/2 quarts.)

  1. Heehee. :) I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! I should make some this week again. So yummy on these chilly evenings. :)

  2. My only complaint about this video is that I’m now STARVING, and I won’t be able to make this soup until I get home in a few hours…lol.

  6. I’m so sorry. :( I have been buying/selling things from thrift stores, but really miss my dumpster finds. I did find a really cool shelf dumpster diving this week and a few Halloween decor finds last week. I don’t find things the same way they do in Florida, because I live in a far smaller city area. The neighborhoods haven’t had anything when I look. Michigan also had a lot more in neighborhoods. I do have a small video I need to upload from one dive.

  7. I like your cooking videos but when are we going to see some more dumpster videos? I know you said everyone had others had found out you area. What about what The Bigger Hammer does,? The soup looks delicious! :)

  13. Yummy, all you need is a grilled cheese sandwich and you have a perfect winter meal.

  14. Same way you would make it today. Make a white or cream sauce(melt butter, add flour and cook on medium heat for 3-5 minutes, slowly add milk, water or cream or all 3 and whisk to combine ), add tomatoes and seasoning. If you want other vegetables, stir-fry them beforehand and add later. The tomatoes can be in the form of fresh tomatoes diced and cooked a bit first, canned diced tomatoes, pureed tomatoes, tomato sauce or tomato paste. All you need for this is one burner, a pot, a whisk.

Okay, I’ll take pity on you and give this recipe from my old Joy of Cooking, first published 1931. Not exactly the method I described above but gives soup just the same

    Cream of Tomato Soup,
    makes 5 and 1/2 cups

    Simmer covered for 15 minutes:
2 cups canned or fresh cut up tomatoes
    1/2 cup chopped celery
    1/4 cup chopped onion
    2 tsp sugar

    Melt in a double boiler
    4 Tbsp butter

    Add
    4 Tbsp flour

    Scald and add
4 cups milk or milk and cream

Strain into this the tomato and vegetable stock. Season it with
    1 tsp salt
    1/8 tsp paprika

Place the soup over hot water for 15 minutes before serving.
