Question by Aaron: I am having trouble finding the right dog food. Am I off to a good start?
I am only 15 years old and I own a 15 pound Border Terrier. I really didn’t know off all the chemicals they put in dog food. I don’t want her to be eating stuff like that. I was feeding her Purina and I read online about how much chemicals it had. I went shopping with my mother yesterday and bought a bag of IAMS Simple & Natural and the kind I bought was the one that tasted like chicken and rice. I went online reading and read that IAMS is not a great food either, because of how many chemicals.
The bad of dog food I bought said on the cover
#1 Ingredient is real chicken for strong, lean muscles
Higher levels of antioxidants like vitamin E, for a strong immune system. *
No corn, wheat, soy or meat by-products**
It sounds a lot better than the previous dog food. I actually searched for Blue Buffalo and I couldn’t find any. I will keep looking for a better dog food, but the one I am using now seems better than the last.
Here is the Ingredients.
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Chicken Flavor, Dried Beet Pulp, Dried Egg Product, Potassium Chloride, Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Monosodium Phosphate, Salt, Dried Apple Pomace, Dried Carrots, DL-Methionine, Dried Peas, Choline Chloride, Fructooligosaccharides, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), Dried Spinach, Dried Tomatoes, Vitamins (Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin E Supplement, Brewers Dried Yeast, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

Try and not give your dog as much cereal and make sure the meat content is high.
Dogs can eat chicken and beef and veg like we do (not tomatoes or apple) so try and give it a healthy option to dog food, what is healthy for you is healthy for your dog.
It also depends on the breed and how energetic the breed is. Make sure the dog get its correct nutrients.

Iams is actually a great brand. Most vets recommend it. You can also get Iams naturals which is even better. You can also opt out and make your own dog food so you know what’s in it…(google that) but I’ve used Iams for years and had nothing but good results.
Corn, wheat, and soy are the three ‘bad’ grains, and by-products are a ‘bad’ protein source. If you can find a food *without* these things, then you are ahead of the game. Iams isn’t the greatest of foods, but this particular one isn’t a bad food, just not a really good one. You won’t find the best foods in the grocery store. Blue Buffalo is an excellent choice, but you’ll need to go to a pet store to purchase it. At least you’re no longer feeding your dog crappy food so you are heading in the right direction
My vet told me never to buy food that they sell at a grocery store, its the equivalent of feeding your child McDonalds every day. If your buying kibble from a pet food store, buy as natural as possible with as few ingredients as possible. If you are feeling really brave, you can make food yourself so you know exactly what your dog is eating (no preservatives or additives with names so long we can’t even pronounce them!). A lot of people believe the best diet you can provide for your dog is a raw diet (just meat, organ, and bone).
