Avoid too much nitrogen, since it will make lots of leaves, but little or no fruit. So examine your fertilizer carefully. The bags of compost, as well as chemical fertilizers, will (or should) have a series of three numbers on them that tell you three key ingredients: N-P-K, in that order. N = nitrogen, P = phosphorus, and K = potassium. With tomatoes, the N number should be a lot less than the other numbers. Miraclo-Gro has a chemical fertilizer made especially for tomatoes. You can also add soil amendments (like lime, I think) to prevent blossom end rot. Do a little independent research on the Internet about growing tomatoes in your state.

  1. Pretty much yep! Some determinates can get 4 or 5 feet tall. You might want to lightly prune the bottoms of these plants for air flow. But I found determinates under 4 feet do the same with or without pruning and pruning REMOVES tomatoes. If a determinate gets a disease it usually naturally dies out before the diseases wipes it out.

  2. I too love tomatoes. Yummy! :-)

  3. Hi, Gary. Nice plants and great video. If I understood right, you suggest leaving a determinate to grow more suckers but prune indeterminate. Is that right or have I got muddled up myself? Thanks a lot for your kind rely.

  4. Love tomatoes that is what I prefer to grow and prefer to use stakes for indeterminates and cages for the shorter determinates. But I mostly use what is available in the yard or on sale at stores.

  5. What do you like to use more cages or stakes?

  6. What is your favorite vegetable or fruit?

  7. Sure. I hope it helps.

  8. thanks for the info man

  9. I grow only heirloom tomatoes and do not agree with the other opinion. I use Miracle Grow 24-8-16 weekly plus I do use compost. If you do what I do you will have a strong crop. I now have plants loaded with almost ripe tomatoes. Secrets are, full sun, plenty of water. I do not think that the compost makes a difference. The fertilizer does all that is necessary.

  10. blood and bone to help the greening of the plants, then potash to nurture the flowers and fruit.
