Question by Scotty: can you grow (tumbling tom) tomato plants in a pot or do you have to put them in a hanging basket?
I am a beginner to growing tomatoes and would like to know the answer the question above

They lend themselves well to growing in hanging baskets. But that’s just because of their “tumbling” habit. They would work just as easily in a large tall pot, and allowed to trail over the sides. Or even grown in a pot, or on the ground, and caged, and trained in a more upright way. Most tomatoes don’t stand up all by themselves anyway, growers cage them, or tie them to stakes to keep them upright.

Yes..they can go into a pot.
You can definitely grow them in a large pot but the way this plant grows, the branches want to trail and they can grow to two feet in length. While you don’t need to hang it per se, you do need to respect its trailing growth habit. There is no way they can be supported in an upright fashion, even with supports. Choose a tall pot, something along the lines of an urn works well, and the branches can cascade over the sides.
They do have wonderfully sweet fruit and are very heavy bloomers/bearers. I grow them on the deck in large terra cotta pots paired with a taller, upright plant in the same pot. The TT grows over the sides and cascades down, and the Big Boys and Early Girls grow up. If you do this, use an extra rich organic soil with a lot of compost added in and remember that you are feeding and watering for two!
