Question by Curious: Why would a person prefer their spaghetti sauce to be super sweet?
Hello everyone. There is this restaurant that serves spaghetti on Thursday nights. Their sauce is super sweet and very thin and a little watery. They claim they serve their spaghetti special with super sweet sauce because their clientle likes it that way. Now grant it their clientle is a much older crowd. About 65-70 years old on average. Is it because the sweeter the sauce the less acid their is in it? Maybe the older people like it cause it doesn’t give them heartburn? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thank you :)

Rather than individual it may be cultural. I know with Chinese, Malaysian and Filipinos have many savoury dishes that are sweet. Sweet Filipino Spaghetti using banana ketchup comes to mind ( link provided ) where the sweet taste is delicious and very much preferred. Runny and thin sauce on the other hand does seem a little unusual, almost nursing home like to aid digestion. You may be onto something there…

  1. my guess is that yes the sugar removes alot of the acidity. The thinness of the sauce is poor quality but the older clientele probably has much to do with it. I bet the sauce is pretty bland too.

  2. A good sauce is not sweet in fact sugar is never added by the cooks/Chefs in Italy ,if they have told you that customers like it that way …. they are either lying to you or these people don’t know the difference , are trying to camouflage a very acidic tomato brand , are using a cheap quality ,are lousy cooks and think that people eat anything put on front of them … some do, mind you . Age as nothing to do with it , I would eat somewhere else from now on if I were you .
