Question by chanceysmama: Bottom leaves on my tomato plants are turning yellow and dying, It is also happening to a few of my okra plant
The bottom leaves on my tomato plants are turning yellow and dying, the fruit seems not to be disturbed by this but it just keeps getting worse and moving up the plant. Some of my okra plants are starting to turn yellow also. Both plants have little brown spots on them then they seem mto consume the whole leaves and dry up and die. Is it blight ? or maybe something else.

I always take off the “sucker” (bottom) leaves off my tomato plants anyway. That way more good goes to the top of the plant where the fruit is.
You could try that.

Cut off a healthy sucker, pull the flowers off if there are any, get some good dirt around them, and keep them wet and watch ’em grow!
I want to take some cuttings off my Cherokee Tomato plants and start late tomatoes (I’m in 7b). These were new to me and gosh they are really good. I assume this method would work for late tomatoes too? Any suggestions as to what part of the plant to cut. They are well over 7 feet tall.
Wow, you’re going to be busy. I’ll have lots of repotting to do very soon. Excellent use for recycling plastic bottles.
Good to see you using the bottles Chuck. I did it one time last year and it worked out pretty good. Its a neat way to be sure and get a good and healthy cutting. Looks like you’ve got it down pat !
I believe that I will only container garden this year since I may be moving late in the season. That way I can take it with me when we move onto the new property.
how long before you plant in the garden ?
wow , ,I had no idea this was a 4’th time …that’s just cool
I know! I cannot believe how pretty those tulips are. Its hard to take your eyes off of them!
This is the 4th year propagating that plant. I will propagate off the one you watched me plant for year 5!!
Thank you!
I don’t leave the watering to chance. The next part of the garden to go in are the automatic watering systems.
I go out of town too often for work and made that mistake once… That is all it took for me to invest in the systems!
very cool. my prob w tomatos in buckets like that is they dry up fast and also blow over easy. thats why im working on using 18 gal self watering tubs this year.. lookin good tho, thanks for post!
Great Update!
really cool stuff ! , I’m curious how the roma will do as it’s a determinate , I wonder If just resets it’s clock. with this techniques you could get 2 harvests from the same season from the same determinate plant., let us now how it goes .. these experiments are fun to watch
That is great! They look pretty healthy. I am on my way out to do some transplanting right now. I seen you had a new video and had to watch it first. Daniel’s tulips are very pretty.
I don’t know where you live, but I am guessing that too much water could be the issue. Leaves on a tomato plant will yellow after time, especially the older leaves, but too much yellowing sometimes suggests too much water.
Previous answers are correct when they say too much water.
The bottom leaves usually turn yellow when your plant is overwatered. Your tomato plant will also begin to get leggy/spindely.
You need to keep the small leaves/suckers picked/pinched off the bottom of your plants. By doing this the plant puts more energy into growing more and bigger tomatoes.
Good luck – nothing tastes as good as home grown tomatoes.
You have spider mites. You need to spray with a miticide such as Kelthane at ten day intervals.
Organically, about all you can do is spray the plants with a blast of water from the hose.
They have a fungus. Spray with a fungicide, and cut back on the watering.
the bottom leaves always turn yellow.towards the middle of the season, the whole plant will turn yellow, but it doesn’t affect the taste.over watering isn’t the problem.they require lots of water.i have never seen any bugs on the tomato plants we grow in our nursery,to cause yellowing, and we have 1,000 plants. take off as many yellow bottom leaves as you can. they are just taking the nutrition from the rest of the plant.
