Question by midas784: Why do Jains not eat green vegetables during Paryushan?
Baffles me when you can eat Red Tomatoes but not green tomatoes. Tomatoes are full of seeds, so why Red Tomatoes are ok ?
In the same vain, Red and Yellow bell peppers should be ok as well ?
I understand why no Roots like Potatoes, Ginger, Beets, etc. but need one good reason why not the above. And I spend 30 minutes on Google looking for an answer and found many sites saying “No Greens” but none would say Why ?
Also one on the naughty side, is Sex Ok during Paryushan ?

Here’s what I found:

During Paryushan, Jains follow the following restrictions on diet.
Drink boiled water.
Eat before sunset.
Refrain from root vegetables like Onion, Garlic, and Potatoes.
Abstain the intake of fermented (soured) food.
Don’t take even the green vegetables.
All the above mentioned items are supposed to contain far more amount of lives (atmas) than the simple grains. Thus, by restricting oneself from intake of these items, a Human Being commits less sin and reaches closer to salvation, the sole purpose of Paryushan.

Not sure I agree with it in from an common sense perspective, but I must confess that it is a very noble sentiment!
As for the “naughty” part of your question, no, I would think not and article linked under Sources confirms that. Non-attachment & Celibacy are strongly encouraged.

@asianlite6 Thank you for taking time and commenting on the video.Regarding your Q:if the onions are to be added to the following recipe ,I would puree them along with the tomatoes, but also cook everything for maybe 6 to 7 more minutes, as onion once made into a paste takes a bit longer to loose it’s raw smell.
Hi ,very nice..what if we want to add onions?when should we add?
I can’t give a great answer because I’m a bad Jain.
no green veggies mainly because it forces us to eat more protein. We get lazy and have flat bread and veggies, but not dal. So during this time we load up on dal. I can’t give a spiritual answer because I don’t know it. Most of the justification is that the books tell us so. (Edit: I googled it, see penultimate paragraph and source)
Green tomatoes are poisonous unless cooked. Yellow and red peppers are not because it’s a fruit and we don’t et fruit this week. See last paragraph for why.
Who has energy for sex when fasting? We’re supposed to be pretty religious this week, so probably not. We don’t talk about sex at religious studies…sex is supposed to be only for procreation, so unless you’re trying for a baby, we aren’t supposed to have it at all. Keep in mind that this rule was made before birth control methods were well understood.
Honestly, I’m ticked that we can’t have fruit this week either. Someone discovered this rule, so the temple stopped serving fruit. Everyone in my family face palmed.
Also, tomatoes aren’t supposed to be eaten at all because of the seeds…you see why I’m a bad Jain? Most people in the us do not follow the dietary guidelines except for this week. In India it’s easier to follow the rules. When I visited family in India, we kept Jain and I didn’t realize this. There’s more variety there.
Edit
No green veggies because it’s not at the end of it’s lifecycle, so you’re eating it before it has a chance to reproduce, preventing life…even in India not followed daily, just during this time of commitment…like xtians and Xmas. Pretty much the same reason we only consume grains and dal only during this week, since they’re harvested at the end of their lifecycle. Which is probably why we don’t consume fruit this week as well.
Thanks for asking this question. I never felt like googling this before.
