Question by maureen j: Sloppy Joe recipe minus the tomato base?
Back in the 60’s my neighbors used to make sloppy joes but they didn’t use any tomato type base. They had chopped onions in it and they were juicy. Don’t think it was gravy but not sure what. Any ideas?

I used to make something like that for my son. I can’t give you measurements because I never used a recipe. I sauteed thinly sliced onions in olive oil. When the onions were translucent I added some finely chopped celery and minced garlic. I sauteed those ingredients until it was soft then added about 1 pound of ground beef and browned it off. I poured off most of the fat, added some ground black pepper, about 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and a can of Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes. I usually served it over rice but it would have worked on hamburger buns. I may also have added a little milk or water if the mixture got too thick.
