Question by Tamar B: How often do I need to water cucumbers and tomatoes?
Title. I’m planning to start a garden plot this year and grow several tomato and cucumber plants. How often am I going to need to water? I realize it might depend on how hot/sunny it gets, so to phrase that a different way, just how damp does the soil need to be?

I’ve also heard you’re supposed to water in the morning rather than at night. Is this the best way to do it?

I usually water my vegetables every other day, I also water them in the morning because they will have water during the day.

  14. Best to water in the morning when the soil is cool.
If it does not rain, water them every other day. If they get too dry, the skins will crack when they get too much water from a rainfall.

  15. When watering your tomatoes, keep in mind that the soil should never get real dry. Every other day is good, unless you are in a drought. The problem is if you go to long without water, tomatoes split after getting a large amount of water. The best thing to do is to have good soil with organic material in it. compost not only feeds but help keep the soil moist for healthy roots. You can water cucumbers about the same amount. With both vegetables, make sure you cage them. You can use a simple tomato cage for both of them. let the cucumber vines grow up the cage and then drape over. This will keep them close to the plant and help to protect them.
I always water in the early evening. It gives time for the water to get into the soil and any extra will not hurt the plants. If you water during the day, you can reflect heat and light back up to the plants and hurt them. If you water before night, the leftover will be no worse then the normal dew that settles at night. I’ve had good crops doing it this way for the last few years.
