Question by Rashid: How to get rid of Slugs in our backyard Garden?
I have small garden in my backyard, I grow tomatoes and Egg plants, but I am tired of getting rid of Slugs and other bugs in the garden. Any effective mdicene? Thanks

Commercial slug bait works the best. You can put out shallow bowls of beer, they will crawl into it and drown, but it will also attract animals as most like beer.

could you have put the cup on the watermelon seedling to protect it?
I’ve never had a problem transplanting them. Make sure you harden them off
prior to transplanting into the garden. Acclimate them slowly to the bright
hot sun.

Great stuff Ray. Nice pumpkin, I’m worried about my squash & those
cantaloupes getting out of hand, but that got huge. I’m trying to think
frost is over here so I can plant too. My peppers keep just up & wilting
then dying in their cups & some tomatoes, bummin me out. Look forward to
seeing you clime that tomato up the trellis. That should be cool
That is epic looking soil that you have. Here in Kentucky there is a lot of
red clay and my yard is full of it.
What planting zone are you Ray?….Im 5a in upstate NY and frost date is
May 20th. I am hardening off some tomatoes but is a covered porch. Only
cold weather crops are in ground and no melons til it gets hot. Im gonna
try 3 tomato planting methods for the same var. I made an upside down
planter, one will use a rope trellis w/ side shoots removed and the other
caged, no pruning. Im intrigued with the potato “bag” method too, so first
yr for that. – Are you growing potatoes? show on video please.
Lol I just wonder what it would be like if that Pumpkin really did go
swimming out of its hole and I wonder where it would go to.

Ray, you do realize there are only 3 types of snakes? Dead snakes, live
snakes and sticks that look like snakes.
The pumpkins are approximately 10-12 inches across. They are far smaller
than halloween pumpkins. They are bred for sweet flavor and smooth texture
of the flesh for baking.

I always had a hard time transplanting watermelon to outside. I always had
to plant watermelon from seed directly outside in order for it to live. Are
they really hard to transplant?

Did a stupid mistake when i tried to put some of my tomatoes out in the
greenhouse.Just had replaced the greenhouse film to a clear type to get
more light in on cloudy days.So i forgot the most obvious thing.Black
pots+sun= very hot pots 100+degrees while the air was about 75. Some of
them died and the rest looks pretty sad.Not sure if they will survive or
not. Lesson learned the hard way,after that incident i put the temperature
sencor at the top of the pots.

You keep being different. I have learned that my differences have made
production much better in my garden. I just bush pruned my indeterminate
tomatoes, hoping I did it right and I get nice bushy tomatoes. “Fine, be
dead”! LOLs
Wow what a pimped up tomato trellis. That looks awesome! I’m glad you were
able to try again with the Charleston Gray Watermelons. I had to do the
same thing with my blue tomatoes from Luke because I discovered my two
plants missing out of the garden bed and what looked like holes dug by two
little doggies. I hope the tomatoes make it this time. I’m not naming names
on which doggies did it, but they know who they are….I’ll be keeping a
close eye on them!
My plants produce male flowers in the beginning in prufusion. It seems the
plant waits until it’s more established to produce female flowers. Nothing
I know can alter how a plant decides which to produce. As far as blossom
drop. Temperature variations that are great or high temps can cause this.
Man- I planted sugar pumpkins in mid-April, and yours is incredibly robust
compared to mine! I must have to get my seedlings more light or something…
i don’t know much about gardening, i like slugs though and wouldn’t get rid of’em any way. they are such cute creatures.
Slugs don’t like any powdery or gritty surfaces, so you can do things like spread fire-place ashes all around your plants, or sand, or even talcum powder. The problems with these are that you have to re-apply them every single time it rains.
The beer traps already recommended are pretty good, too. What your other answerer hasn’t mentioned is that the traps work best if you sink tall, thin cans, or even glass or plastic jars, into the garden soil up to their rims. Pour an inch of beer into the bottom of each.
Other animals shouldn’t get into the beer unless their beaks or paws are very long. Insects, however, will have a field day, as will any small critters such as mice or frogs (I don’t think frogs are attracted to beer, though, but I’m not sure). Check daily, since beer evaporates. Pour all the dead slugs onto your compost heap.
Use the internet to research lots of solutions to other bug and pest infestations. There are so many solutions that we can never list them all in a single Y!A answer for you. … 😀
