Question by Wiwi: I got sprayed by a skunk?
That little piece of shit got me good il admit it, i was putting lights on my back yard and all of a sudden i see him about 3 feet away from me just looking at me. So im like whatever ill just let it be and hopefully it will leave me alone. So about 30 seconds later i look back at it, I SWEAR it just sticks its tongue out at me and turna around about 10 seconds later BOOM! I smelled like burnt rubber and cheese. I got work tommorow, should i hit up the walmart and buy me a few crates of tomato juice? Will it be effective ? Any other suggestions to get rid of the smell?

Wash your clothes OUTSIDE in a bucket of warm water to which you have added a box of BAKING SODA and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide–this will actually change the chemical composition of the spray and neutralize it. Don’t bother with the tomato juice–you can’t wash your clothes in it because they will be stained forever.

Wash yourself in baking soda and water too. Tomato juice really doesn’t work–it only fools your nose into not smelling the thiols and sulphur smells in the spray for a while–then you will still smell it later until it airs out and goes away–which can take some time. The baking soda/peroxide mixture WILL neutralize the odor.

  1. At least it had a sense of humor and stuck its tongue out at you, sassy little bastard. Christin K had the right answer although tomato juice and lemon juice are both effective at covering the odors from the oils and the sulphur-containing organic compounds called thiols, so they are not exactly useless. The recipe for the solution Christin K is talking about is:
    1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
    1/4 cup Baking Soda
    2 tbsp Dish Soap

And you must use it while it is still frothing (oxidizing). You cannot store this solution and do not put it in a sealed container it could burst and potentially injure someone. Be sure that the hydrogen peroxide is 3% and fresh. You may find it necessary to repeat the treatment with a fresh solution. But before you do all of this, now would be a good time to go deer or elk hunting, especially if you are a bow hunter. And the next time stick your tongue out at the skunk.
