As a Chef, I can honestly tell you yes.
Grape tomatoes are not as sweet as cherry tomatoes but are larger than the cherry. Vine ripened Roma tomatoes are perfect for making thick, hearty sauces (spaghetti, bolognese, etc.) because they are more robust in flavor and absorb more of the surround elements (ingredients) than your beef steaks or early girl brand which are better for sandwiches, wraps, dicing etc.
All in all though, at the end of day, it’s getting harder to distinguish flavors because there as so many varieties and cross breeds now. If you really want pure flavor, go with an heirloom brand and you won’t strike out. But if you’re going for that hearty flavor for sauce, stick with the Roma.
If you ever get the chance to grow your own tomatoes, taste test them and you will totally tell the difference. Nothing is better than a home grown tomato or any other type of edible for that matter.
Hope this helps!
