Once the tomato plants are about 3′ tall, remove the leaves from the bottom 1′ of stem. These are usually the first leaves to develop fungus problems. They get the least amount of sun and soil born pathogens can be unintentionally splashed up onto them. Spraying weekly with compost tea also seems to be effective at warding off fungus diseases.
Pinch and remove suckers that develop in the crotch joint of two branches. They won’t bear fruit and will take energy. These are the only leaves you remove from a tomato plant, so I’m not sure why you mentioned three leaves. I guess any leaves that show signs of fungas could be counted as the third leave to remove.

I’ll never look at my tea bags the same way again!
Rabbit can be used fresh as its not considered a hot manure. Chicken works
well as well. I’ve been using it as a squirrel and chipmunk deterrent and
it seems to work so far.
Sheep muck is good all round food because they graze on plants that have
long tap roots and draw up trace elements like potassium from deeper in the
soil. But it won’t quite be organic, because the sheep get dosed with all
sorts of acaricides etc you really need to leave it to lie for two years
before it will not add any pesticide residues to your crop. Full marks for
making the most of what’s lying around ! Love the diary
@vivsgran I think Chicken Poo is quite high in Nitrogen so that would be
better for Green leaved things like Lettuce and Cabbage. As for Rabbit,as
they are generally grass grazers I suppose they’d be similar to sheep or
horse muck ? It’s not an exact science whatsoever so I suppose you need to
just give it a try. Cheers,Dan.
Thanks, Dan. The good thing about organic tea is that you can feel free in
spreading it about, as its so cheap to make.
Giant Turd Tea Bag! Have a spot of tea? I have five buckets of fish poo
from one of the hatcheries here. Think I’ll make some tea too. A giant
trout turd tea bag. Isn’t it something that my friends give me poo? I have
the best friends in the world! I also have the best garden for miles
around. Your giant veggies are so nice. I might give it a shot myself. I
want to do Parsnips.
