When it is cold, you can pick green tomatoes to ripen indoors. Not a problem.

  1. no stupid… they have to be red

  2. They’ll be a lot better if you wait at least until they start to turn red. Tomatoes picked green will still ripen somewhat, but they won’t get sweeter or juicier off the vine.

  3. In Soth India(Asia) green tomatoes are cooked with alpino pepper like pungent chillies and coconut-they are ,very ,very tasty.but only my wife knows the receipe. But Westernes do not like pungent taste.-Somayaji

  4. Only if you wanna make fried green tomatoes! Hiyoooooo!

  5. yes you can and if you like fried green tomatoes you can make them. But they will ripen once you take them off the vine

  6. If the climate’s good let them ripen on the plants only.

  7. You can if you want to, but I would recommend you letting them ripen on the vine. I find that they taste so much better that way instead of harvesting while green and ripening off the vine. Its your own preference. Why don’t you take one off now and let it rippen off the vine, then let the others stay on the vine and ripen, then do a taste test and see which one you like best, then you can continue from there. But weather will be changing soon so keep an eye out on them.

  8. Green tomatoes are wonderful, especially fried. Coat in flour, dip in beaten egg, dip in seasoned (s and pepp) cornmeal, fry in bacon drippings until golden. Enjoy

They are also wonderful in salad, salsa, pickled, chutney. Fun! And the person who said you are stupid was wrong!!

  9. The only time I pick them green is at the end of the season before a hard frost. I pick them and put them in my sunny kitchen windows on the sill until they have ripened. If you can leave them on until they are ready to eat, they will taste better. However, you don’t want to leave them past that stage of readiness or they will begin to split.

  10. Best time to pick tomatoes is when they give with a gentle tug. If you have to pull on them, leave them. Green, yellow, red, doesn’t matter. I would check them daily before they fall on the ground.

Instead of ten points, would you send me a couple of those? I LOVE homegrown maters!

And no, you are not stupid.

  11. Wait until they are vine rippen. You will be rewarded with flavor.

Remember that tomatoes are semi-tropical plants, so starting them inside yearly before planting might help.

  12. You can pick them really at any stage, some like the taste of a vine ripened tomato, when the tomato basically falls off the vine on its own, others like a less flavor and pick them earlier when they are orange. The best time to pick a green tomato is at the end of the season when the green tomatoes are medium sized and the weather starts dipping into the upper 40’s – lower 50’s at night. They will be at the top of the plant, and they will have a thicker skin than the earlier green tomatoes. These green tomatoes are the best for frying. Or for making a minced tomato pie with.

hope that helps – and yes, i hate point mongers too lol
