Question by LifesBeenGood2MeSoFar: What can I use in place of condensed tomato soup…?
I have one can of tomato soup in my cabinet.
The recipe I am throwing together calls for two
cans of tomato soup.
Can I use tomato paste and mix it with beef broth
maybe, in place of the 2nd can of tomato soup?
thanks everyone… i’m making a sheperd’s pie… i don’t want to go out to the grocery store to pick up anything – and wanted to compromise with the tomato sauce concoction… i actually think it will add more flavor than just the condensed soup.

thanks char_c, chef ren, and brain babe for your input… :o)
thank you everyone, actually :o)!!!!!

  1. Hi Melody! I’m so glad you like the recipes!!! there are so many (easy and
more creative ones) that I can keep doing videos forever :-) the secret of
a good homemade tomato sauce stays in the tomatoes. the more ripe, tasty
and sweet, the better. I know this is not tomato season, but we had such a
warm and sunny winter that I found good and tasty ones. let me know how it
    goes! ciao b

  2. Hi Barbara, I’m going to try this recipe out tomorrow. Looks delicious!
Milo has been loving all the baby food I’ve been making him so thank you
again for all your videos. I look forward to them every week :) Take care!

  3. Loved this sauce :)

  4. You can use about half the can of paste whipped with some water (about a half tomato soup canfull of water). It’ll make tomato sauce. It’ll work fine.

  5. It would help if you gave the recipe that you are making

  6. Use tomato sauce, ketchup, lil pinch of cloves n spoon of sugar. That should be close enough

  7. I agree with the others, you should be able to mix the paste with some water to the soup consistency and be fine… hold the broth…

  8. Sure you can, just use less of the tomato paste and beef broth until you taste it’s strength. You can always add more if need be but I think that’s a smart substitution, considering your situation. I hope it works out for you, I have no doubt it will knowing that you are creative enough to have thought of an intelligent replacement of what you had on hand. Happy New Years to you and your family!

  9. Yes, that is exactly what I would do, especially if you are making a soup of some type, or chili, etc. You could even stir in a bit of brewed coffee, which I always use for part of my liquid in any stew or roast that is beef-based. Just mix until the consistency is similar to the can of soup you have. (The only thing this wouldn’t work for is the famous tomato soup cake, which isn’t that great anyway!)

Coffee doesn’t pair well with chicken, but it gives such a richness to beef dishes that people always comment on how fab my cooking is. I know you asked about the soup, but you get two for the price of one tonight, girlfriend!
