Question by Stealth Girl: What is the best heirloom tomato plant that will grow in northern Illinois for an urban dweller?
I’m very fond of heirloom tomatoes for their rich taste and interesting colors. I’d like to plant a medium to small heirloom for salads. I’ve had trouble growing heirlooms in past years but am willing to try again. I have a small yard with only medium sunshine though which can be an issue.
Any advice tomato growers out there?

Northern Illinois has a great climate for growing tomatoes, as long as you get them in early enough. ‘Carmello’ is a nice, 3-4″ heirloom salad tomato that does really well in California, where I live, and in Michigan, where my sister’s live. I’ve been growing them for 20 years, and I find it’s resistant to a lot of wilts and other problems that heirloom tomatoes often have. ‘Carmello’ also grows really well in containers, provided they’re large enough–I grow them in 10-gallon Smart pots on my deck, as well as raised beds in my garden.

‘Black cherry’ is a nice heirloom cherry tomato with real tomato flavor, and not just the sweetness of most cherry tomatoes. ‘Valencia’ is an orange heirloom from Johnny’s Seeds that’s wonderful. It produces 2-3″ orange fruits with sweet flesh reminiscent of mangoes, and very few seeds.

I hope you enjoy an abundant tomato harvest this summer!
