What does one do when you have LOTS of green tomatoes? One option – wine! With ginger and clove.
Question by Connie S: Anyone else in the NE having trouble with their tomato plants not growing?
It’s been very wet and cool here and the early girl plant I bought isn’t growing and the bottom leaves are yellow. It does have two green tomatoes, one about the size of a golf ball and the other the size of a cherry. The stem isn’t growing and it doesn’t look as if it can support bigger fruit. Is it because of the lack of full sun and the cool, wet weather? The flower bed I planted it in is constantly wet because of this weather.

Absolutely. If your bottom leaves are yellowing you may want to side dress with lime and a slow release fertilizer. Unfortunately the plant itself is going to be thinner and taller due to the weather conditions but if you stake your tomato well it should be able to bear the weight of the fruit without toppling over. I am in the same boat so I feel your pain but with a little extra care they should do just fine. Good luck.

water in the air lock isnt good either as bacteria can live in water i use a drop of spirit like whisky or vodka in the air lock
We’ve got a 5-gallon glass carboy, but it was full of beer at the time! 😉 We changed out the airlock not long after the video. The wine was FANTASTIC! Very dry, like a Sauternes.
if you start in a larger container, possibly a pail with a lid, you would not get the wine in the airlock. The airlock should just have water in it. How did it taste? I have been thinking of making a tomato wine.
It’s definitely the weather. Hopefully if the weather warms up and the soil drains a bit the tomatoes can recover. But they probably won’t have a very good crop. A lot of plants are suffering now.
