Question by : How long before tomatoes mature?
I am really excited – I finally have itty bitty green tomatoes! (first garden of my own). I check the garden every day, and have been picking lettuce for some time now, and have been picking peas. I knew tomatoes flowered, but there is fruit on them! How long before they mature?

My roma tomatoes have started to fruit, as well as the Early Girls.

I have Better boy and cherry tomatoes also, but no little fruits yet.

Thanks in advance!

  1. It all depends on the variety of tomatoes you’re growning. If you bought seeds, check the packet and it should tell you how many days to maturity. Same thing goes for plants you may have bought. There should be tags with them, and if they don’t state days of maturity, you could look up the variety on the internet.

Make sure your tomatoes have a regular supply of water. If the soil is dry for many days in a row, and then you water alot or get alot of rain, some of your mature tomatoes may crack from a growth spurt.

Good luck with your first garden!

p.s. If you like cherry tomatoes, I just have to mention one of the better varieties I’ve grown. It’s called Sweet Chelsea, and you wouldn’t believe the buckets of tomatoes you’ll get from just one plant!

  2. On the tomatoes now that they are starting to bloom..DO NOT USE ANY HIGH NITROGEN FERTILIZER….this will give you all leaves and hardly any fruit… Switch over to a high phospherous fertilizer…all purpose miracle grow is a definate NO NO at this point ..it is too high in nitrogen..You need a fertilizer with high phospherous and potaasium content..switch over to miracle grow “Bloom Booster”…which has the phospherous and drops the amount of nitrogen..I will attach a link with a picture of it for you..also about every 10 days put a couple tablespoons of epsom salt sprinkled around the base of the plants..but not piled up on the stalk..just loosely around them…On the lettuce..do not use this bloom buster for it likes high nitrogen….fertilize these plants seperately with the differnt fertilizers…
