Question by Donna C: How many tomatoes will one plant produce?
I’m going to start my seedlings soon, and I’m trying to figure out how many to plant. The only problem is that I have no idea how many tomatoes an average plant might produce. Can someone fill me in? Thanks!

you failed to tell us what type of tomato? A Beef Steak which is a large tomato plant will hold 10 tomatoes or more depending on the soil and the growing conditions it encounters. Smaller tomatoes will produce as many as 50 tomatoes in a season. and you can count on over 100 to 150 on a cherry tomato plant. Be sure to plant the plant high on a mound of dirt and make a moat around the plant to hold the water at the base plant no closer than 3 feet apart to allow for growth. 4 plants will give 2 people all the tomatoes they need for the summer and part of the fall. Planting more and you will be the kindest person on earth to have given them away to Forgotten Harvest or some other charity. Or Just give them to friends with a salt shaker. mmmm good.

  1. There are too many factors involved to make an accurate prediction. Rainy weather can cause fungal attacks, and there is always the chance of other diseases. If the weather turns hot too soon, the plants may continue to bloom but they won’t set any fruit. Nutrient deficiency could cause problems with tomatoes that do set, and too much nitrogen can cause leaf growth at the expense of fruit production. Different varieties produce different results. Generally a large, beefsteak type will produce fewer fruits than a paste type (Roma), but a healthy tomato should produce at least a dozen fruits. Determinate types will set all their fruit close together, then stop producing. Indeterminate types will continue to set fruit over a longer period of time, but either way you will have an over abundance at some point if all goes well. See links below.

  2. Bottom line: There is no average really. The amount of tomatoes you’ll get depend on variety and growing conditions—soil, water, and climate.

I think Oldmansea’s numbers are reasonable if you don’t intend to do much canning or preserving. (4 plants).

Last year I planted: 2 Punta Banda cherry tomatoes, 6 Roma tomatoes, 3 Early Girl hybrids. I got enough tomatoes for fresh eating, 10 quarts of salsa, 4 pints of tomato juice, 4 quarts of sauce and enough crushed tomatoes in freezer bags to last until the next harvest. (9 plants).

About three days before the predicted first frost, I picked all the green tomatoes and stored them in my back room to ripen indoors. We had our last two tomatoes diced in a salad on January 18th. No more garden tomatoes in this family until June.

  3. !there is no such amount per plant, it all depends on the variety of tomato. but in general, if it’s a medium size tomato, one plant should be enough for one person!!!
