Question by ommi: Will water on my tomato plant’s leaves burn them?
Hi, I was wondering if it was bad to get water on a tomato plant’s leaves when watering them in the morning? Some of my plant’s leaves appear to be a bit burned, and I was wondering if it was maybe because I got water on them. Conversely, is it actually good for the plant to get water on the leaves, especially on a hot day? (I’m thinking like evaporation = cooling effect as it does for animals). Thank you thank you!

Yes, the sun burns them through the water droplets. Just water around the base of the plant in the early a.m. or eve.! Go ahead and pull off the dead leaves, and it should perk back up : )

John, even though you are across the continent from me…you are still such
great inspiration! Thank you for sharing with us.
By the way, I live in florida so winter isnt that bad, still sunny with
cool temperature during the day. Maybe 2-3 days out the week will be really
cold but other than that, the weather is great during winter here. I just
recently planted an apple seed december13th and its doing fine too,
basically on its way to grow up as long as i keep up with it, and i will!!
but im trying to plant some greens for my meals to grub on!
Every year I get too impatient and plant too early. I just put out some
tomato plants and peppers, I hope we don’t get another frost! Good to know
about the osh guarantee.
Great job!
I havent had a problem with cucumber beetles. What I would do is let some
chickens in there. They love to eat cucumber beetles. Another technique I
use is hand picking. Go out there at night and pick them off. You can also
try a trap. or try growing cucumber relatives such as west indian gherkin
or mexican gherkin. They are more “wild” and may have more resistance to
the beetles.
John do the lowes and home depot near you sell bonnies plants? They do here
in the south but they are not organic. Do you as well buy some non organic
starter plants because it seems thats all the home stores sell. The pavers
really aesthetically makes the garden look even better than before.
Yes, they sell bonnie. Yes, I do purchase some “non-organic” starts some
times. But never a GMO start. Once I plant and grow them, I consider them
organic. Thanks for the complements on the pavers.
What green edible plants are good to buy now to plant during winter? I was
planning on going to home depot and other farmers markets to check out who
has what and pick and choose from what I want, But im not sure on whats the
best green plants to purchase now.. Got any tips?
Keep it up I am watching you from Louisville, Ky. Would love to see more
success and failure videos. Oh yeah, one question about cucumbers, how do
you keep the cucumber beetles from the cucumber plant. It seem like every
year right when I start getting my fruits the plant wilted and died, and I
know it’s the beetles. I try neem oil, and even seven dust and I get the
same thing every year, DEAD plants in mid summer.
I put my cucumbers in too early and they all ended up droopy and just
collapsed.
foooooooooooooooooooooood!
Wow that’s a lot of plants for planting!! 😉 i can’t wait to be planting
myself!
DO NOT put water on your tomato plant’s leaves in the morning. By doing so you are actually allowing the sun to cook your plant. If you put water on the leaves, I would suggest doing so in the evening, when the sun is almost down. If you water your plants in the morning, do so before the sun is up very high, and don’t water the leaves, try to get just the roots. (:
no, on a hot day-that is when they are most likely to get burned…you should always try to get water to the roots as this is the main way they get food, and the leaves are for photosynthesis…so if its in the morning, it shouldnt matter too much if you get the leaves wet, but i would definitely try not too in the afternoon
Not unless you water then in midday when the sun is shining directly on them. Water in the early morning or in the evening. And try to avoid getting water on the leaves by soaking the ground around the plants.
U should water them at night because if you don’t these water droplets combined with the sun causes your leaves to burn the same way a magnifying glass and the sun’s heat causes things to burn!!
yea
Tomatoes can handle water on the leaves – easily, hon. After all… plants love rain, you know? But if you have any fertilizer in the water, the fertilizer IN the water can burn the leaves.
Sometimes leaves will just die in response to sun or too little or too much water, etc. If it’s just a couple at a time, don’t worry about them.
As for watering in high heat days – I sometimes water the soil just a little bit – so the roots get a little drink and can rehydrate the plant a little. It is better overall to water when it is early morning or late evening so the plant can take full advantage of the water it receives.
Good luck with your tomatoes!
Peace.

you can get much information in this website, If you will check anyone blue link in website.
Each time it rains and the sun comes out the leaves are wet and do not get burned. The burned by sun’s magnification is a wives’s tale.
More likely you’ve got salt in your water that might be causing problems.
Burned or pitted leaves are common especially near the end of the growing cycle. You’ve had a season of hit-and-run bugs such as leaf hoppers stopping by for a sip through the leaves.
Sports fields have been known to turn on sprinklers to cool the turf just as you were with the tomatoes. But you needed worry about the tomatoes. They are semi tropical and love warmth…….up to a point. You’d be better off providing a light shade covering…cheese cloth awning…to cool the plants. Plus that tiny bit of shade discourages those dastardly leafhoppers from dining.
The idea that watering is bad for plants when the sun is shinning was dreamed up by someone with way too much time on their hands. I have heard these same people say watering at night kills plants. When exactly will these people who never farmed in their lives going to water?
What are you going to do if it rains? Hold an umbrella over all your grass, trees, plants and flowers? The only two effects of watering during the hotter part of the day are your plants get water and it evaporates faster due to the heat.
Hot dry spots on the leaves are more likely from a pest having taken a bite to see if it likes tomato plants and moved on to your roses.
Spray as your water bill can handle.
