Question by educator4kids: What are some cheap alternatives for recipe ingredients?
I have been trying to cut back on grocery expenses. Instead of buying spaghetti sauce, I now buy tomato sauce and spice it up. When a recipe calls for salsa, I use a can of diced tomatoes and chilies because they are so much cheaper and pack the same kick. Does anyone have any other ideas on replacing certain ingredients with cheaper ones? Thanks!

  1. I mash up avocado and mix in a little chopped onion and salsa for guacamole, its quick and delicious!

  2. I am a pretty good bargain shopper and I guy canned spaghetti sauce at a grocery warehouse or dollar story…add meat, onions and sometimes canned tomatoes and it is always good. Usually costs about $ 1.50…and I always have leftover sauce I can use for something else.

I think spaghetti sauce which is already spiced is less expensive than having to add them. The meat and onions, mushrooms or whatever are
optional….you could just use the sauce by itself.

  3. Well, margarine for butter.

I’d rather shop the sales than scrimp on the ingredients. Also, more stir-fries and casseroles, pasta and one dish rice things help you cut the amount of meat per serving, one of the more expensive items on a shopping list.

You can subsitute chicken leg meat for breast meat, pork loin for tenderloin, sirloin for striploin.

Powdered skim milk for cooking, but I’m not so keen on drinking it.

  4. I love salmon cakes – fried – but I use a small can of tuna now and my son eats it, so it must be OK. I make my own creamed soups, toss cooked veggies in blender or food processor with milk and spices, or chicken broth and some butter. I cube tofu and put into spaghetti sauce overnight so it absorbs flavor, no more ground beef; I have also started spicing up the tomato sauce or diced tomatoes for sauce. I buy the name brand frozen foods at the Dollar Tree. I also buy my spices/herbs from a local co-op – bulk – most cost less than a dollar for enough to last a while; they also sell good cheeses really cheap. They also sell stevia (.05 pk) and whey protein (7.00 lb) in bulk that’s cheap. I make my own green tea drinks. Two green tea bags and one of a flavor makes a quart of a good drink. I also put cut berries in my bottle of water for flavored water to carry with me.
Oatmeal is a staple, but now I add brown sugar, chopped nuts or chopped trail mix and some flax seed (from my blender) and don’t buy the premade packs.

  5. BUTTERMILK=LEMON JUICE

    An Egg= 2 tablespoon water
    1 tablespoon tapioca flour
1 tablespoon coconut oil (or other oil but coconut is best)
    1/4 teaspoon baking powder

  6. For fruit juice, try buying the frozen concentrate and mixing it up at home. Usually less than $ 1 for the same amount of juice that would cost $ 3 or more in the store and will taste the same.
Not an ingredient… but it will save money. If you have allergies or just a stuffed up nose try this. In a one quart container, fill with warm water. Add 1&1/2 heaping TSP of salt and 1 TSP baking soda (plain baking soda only). Use a syringe or a ear and nose bulb to flush out your sinuses. It is a little uncomfortable at first but it really works and may save you a trip to the doctor’s office or from having to buy allergy or sinus medicine.
For whipped cream get a small carton of heavy whipping cream and beat it with an electric mixer for about 5 minuets or until stiff. Add sugar to taste.

  7. There are some cooking recipes. Maybe you can give it a shot.
