Question by Milo: What vegetables are best for a garden?
We want to make a garden in our backyard, but don’t know which vegetables to grow. We want to grow regular and cherry tomatoes, but other than that we’re not sure. We live in the pacific north west, so I don’t know if the cold whether will be a problem or not. It gets pretty warm in the summer though. We’d also like to grow sun flowers.

I live in the pacific northwest, too. Tomatoes are a good start. Lettuce likes cooler weather and can be sown as soon as the soil isn’t frozen. There are A LOT of different vegetables you can grow. A good rule of thumb is to plant what you will eat, otherwise you will be giving it away or throwing it away. Finding what zone you live in will give you a good idea when to plant your veggies so the frost won’t do them in before they can get started. You might want to keep a gardener’s journal to keep track of what worked, what didn’t, what you liked, germination dates, etc. Experiment and have fun. Good luck!
Sunflowers are one of the few natives crops we have in North America. The grow well and are excellent food for humans and wildlife alike. The biggest factors are extremes of temperature and precipitation. Plants that get started inside tend to do better. I grew a 6 foot sunflower in Massachusetts, and the seedling was in a dixie cup originally. You should use saltmarsh hay or a special grass as mulch. It helps with moisture retention and controlling weeds. It will also moderate soil temperature to an extent. Good luck with the harvest!
Yes sunflowers are wonderful because they produce a lot of seeds for next year and they delight children, but bring the bees…plant far in the yard. and what about squash, strawberries or onions..something that produces quickly during your warm period..i would look in your local nursery and talk to a few people. .
Grow what you like to eat. Try different items. Read the back of the seed packets for when & how to plant.
