Question by Kevin: What can substitute for dried thyme in a bean/ham soup?
I am in the middle of making navy bean with ham soup and realized I am out of the 2 1/2 tsp dried thyme that it calls for. Is there some other herb that is similar that I can substitute with or should I just go without?

If you have Oregano use that it’s not similar since they all have their own taste, if you don’t have any just omit it for this time.

  1. You could probably use any of the savory herbs and be fine. Bay leaf, marjoram, terragon, rosemary, etc.

  2. oregano and basil is a nice combination for navy bean soup.

  3. You could just leave it out or try savory, marjoram or oregano

  4. Beans will hold up well to almost any of the stronger tasting herbs. Oregano, rosemary, savory – use a bit of all or nothing. Recipes are meant to be played with, so experiment. The beans and ham will be good no matter what!

Add lots of garlic and onion, carrots and celery too. A little canned tomato product can add a lot of richness to this kind of soup too – paste, sauce, etc. Don’t be afraid to put your own spin on recipes.

  5. add more garlic and onions
and a good shake or two of black pepper

  6. my family loves my ham and bean(or split pea)soup and I’ve never used thyme…only a bay leaf. I think it will be fine, just keep tasting
