Question by CAT PERSON RETIRED: Developed a severe Allergy to Raw Tomatos yet I can eat them Cooked why?
I used to be able to eat tomatoes in salads, sandwiches, just by themselves. Then several years ago they started giving me severe cramps and the runs. Its all kinds of tomatoes that does this. And its the only food that does this to me. I have asked Drs, Dietitians, etc, but none of them can figure out why I can eat them in their cooked state, ie pasta sauce, on a pizza but not raw. There must be something in them that breaks down when cooked, would like to know if anyone has an idea what it might be. I would like to be able to eat tomatoes again and maybe if I know the answer I could get some where.
Accutane is for acne, not tomato allergy or intollerence.
The key here is I used to be able to eat them why develop this condition and is there any hope?

Not an allergy, an intollerance.
Generally due to the acid in the tomatoes.
My whole family cannot eat raw tomatoes and many of us cannot eat it cooked unless highly processed..
It has been suggested to us that we try the low acid tomatoes (generally yellow) but as the thought of eating raw tomato grosses me out and I don’t even like the taste I haven’t tried this so I have no idea if it would work.
Green tomato pickles are the only way I enjoy tomato.

Many fruits produce a number of enzymes – a type of protein- that can lead to an allergic reaction. Tomatoes are actually fruits, not vegetables. In nature, the fruit uses these enzymes to ripen, etc. Allergies to tomatoes aren’t as common as to some other fruits. Each fruit produces its own enzymes (Papaya – papain; Pineapple – bromelin; etc.)-which explains why you aren’t allergic to all fruit.
Cooking actually destroys proteins and changes their shape to the extent that your body may no longer recognize them as allergens. Higher heat does a better job of destroying the protein. So a stir-fry might not do it, but a tomato sauce can be okay.
