Question by A2JC4life: How do I convert a stovetop recipe to a slow cooker?
I have seen lots of charts for converting OVEN recipes to the crockpot, but am unsure of how to convert a STOVETOP recipe. I have a soup recipe that calls for simmering 8-12 hours. By a standard conversion chart, this would not be able to cook in a slow cooker in a single day, but that can’t be right! I’m assuming I should be able to cook it for the same range of time, but don’t know whether I should use the low setting or the high setting.

Generally, if you want something to cook in your crockpot for 6 hours or less, use the high setting.
Anything longer than that, go for low.

So, if you have a soup or stock recipe that says to simmer on a stove for 8-12 hours just put it in the crockpot, on low for the same amount of time.

But now you have got me thinking, if it is a tomato sauce recipe that you simmer from fresh tomatoes for 8 hours,
it won’t work in your crock pot, because the whole point of making the tomato sauce is for it to thicken through evaporating the water in the tomatoes. And that won’t happen in the crock pot because you have to put the lid on.

But one more note: If you are making a stock from a turkey carcass, or something like that, I would put it in for an hour or so, on the highest setting, so it gets up to temp faster, and then I would turn it to low for the remaing last 8 hours.

  11. I have done the same thing. I keep it on low if it is going to be simmering for most of the day. My recipes turned out great. What are you making? I love new crock pot ideas.

  12. How do you convert a stove top recipe to a slow cooker, just do it. When I do this, I play it by ear. If you are doing a soup, I set it on the low for the 8 -12 hours as it says. Put it on high for a shorter amount of time as 4-6 hours. This has worked for me. Don’t be afraid to just try, that’s the fun of cooking.

  13. I put it on the high setting and just check it every so often to see if it needs more liquid.

  14. Use high setting first to let your soup boil, then reduce the heat to low setting. If there is meat or poultry in your soup, I think it will take 6 to 8 hours . But still you have to time it yourself for the first time to see how long it will take, then next time around you will know.
