this was gross!
I have a secret recipe from my step dad that I can’t give to you, but I can tell you this. What ever amount of onion your recipe calls for… double it. My step dad has been canning this sauce for over 30 years. He started with a basic recipe and kept tweaking it until he had something he liked. The one thing he kept adding more of, was the onions. He will can 22 quarts of sauce at a time, and will use 40 cups of diced onions. It really makes a difference. Try it!
mine takes a while to make, but it’s so worth it!. here’s my recipe
Keep A Man Forever Sauce
1 lb cooked ground hamburger meat, drained
1 lb cooked jimmy dean regular sausage, drained
1/2 onion, chopped
2 tbsp crushed garlic
lots of mushrooms, chopped
one small can of chopped black olives
2 cans of diced tomato’s, the flavored ones are best, like garlic and basil or something
2 cans of store bought spaghetti sauce, anything but ragu. I like the classico or bertolli brands, i usually get 1 marinara flavor and one cheese flavor.
dump it all into a large pot, put on medium heat, add some italian seasoning, a few bay leaves, just a pinch of salt, a tiny bit of pepper. once it starts to boil, turn it down to just hotter than low. 2 if you have numbers on your stove settings, put a lid on, and let it cook for about an hour, stirring every now and then. you want it hot enough to simmer and bubble a little, but not boil.
after an hour, make some noodles and some garlic bread and salad if you like, remove the bay leaves and you have an awesome dinner.
