Question by suzy: How do I keep the rabbits out of my garden…. short of shooting them and making soup?
I grow tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc. all simple stuff. The rabbits eat the leaves and sprouts before I get any fruit. I’d rather not put up a fence, I know that’s the easy answer, but I’d like to avoid it.

  1. Hi Emily, yes, seaweed! :) MegaSea is the product I was referring to. I
can’t put a link in this reply for some reason, but you can read about it
on our website at sweet corn organic nursery dot com. Yes, all of your
plants would love it and benefit by it, not just tomatoes and basil. Hope
    that helps! — Bryan

  2. At then end, did I hear you say “water with seaweed”? What sort of product
should I look for to make that? I am in zone 6b if that makes any
difference. Would I use it all over my vegetable garden or just around my
    basil and tomatoes?

  3. thanks all around the rim

  4. This sounds silly but I bought the rabbits rabbit food from the pet shop but they weren’t interested but they will eat bird seed. I put out a dish of that and they don’t go near the plants! Hope this works for you.

  5. Fill old socks with human and/or pet hair, dryer lint, vacuum bag contents and hang on stakes around your vegies. People pee (save it in a coffee can and sprinkle around garden perimeter), cat pee and/or poop. Slivers of old soap bars, anything human smelling. No rabbits visit my 40′ x 60′ garden of corn, peas, beans peppers… Good luck.

  6. I have found in the short time of organic gardening Ive done, that either a home made garlic or pepper spray works well. Other than having to spray after a rain. Take two whole garlic bulbs skins and all, place in blender with 2 cups of water and blend for about two minutes. Then let it set for no longer than a day. Sift it off with a pair of old pantyhose or cheese clothe, and add 1 gallon of water. Instant Rabbit remover. Same for pepper but use 10 hot peppers. Hotter the better. But of dcourse you know not to put it on the fruit its self . Look up organic insectacides.

  7. This sounds sorta cruel… but it keeps em from coming back for a short while (well I haven’t had any back for 3 years, they come CLOSE but not to the plants) get a high powered BB gun (the ones you pump up) and shoot em with pellets or bb’s, just 3 to 5 pumps suffices to give em a good hurting. Of course you’ll have to be a good shot! I am, but they do make scopes for other people who can’t. Doesn’t work with squirrels so good, they get my bird food constantly…. it has worked for about 3 days then the little bugger will come back. They of course make and sell deterrents at hardware stores or home improvement centers…. but they would get washed away.
