Fall Tomatoes and Sweet Potatoes

Gathering Fall tomatoes and sweet potatoes.
Video Rating: 5 / 5

Question by Smart Kat: What are your favorite things to eat when on a low calorie diet?
I like grilled chicken breast, brown rice & edamame.
I also stuff tomatoes with other vegies, a few gracker crumbs & just a bit of cheese, topped with cracker crumbs & a bit of cheese. My boyfried loves them & they only have 25 calories per half a tomato.
I also keep chunks of low-fat ham & pineapple with a bit of cinnamon & sweetener in a bowl in the fridge.

It’s a low calorie diet somewhat low on sugar & fat, with a good balance of grains, vegies, fruit, meat & even some dairy.

Any ideas?

  1. Great video Mark! 5 stars… Hey have you ever had fried squirrel? & the
    sweet potatoes look wonderful!

  2. taste a lot like chicken :)

  3. I had a bad feeling about Gustav so we went ahead and picked and chopped up
7 gals. of bell peppers and 1 gal. of jalapenos right before the storm. We
also got a crate of eggplant. Had we not done that we would have lost them.
Surprisingly a few eggplants, which were planted next to the tomatoes, made
it through the storm. I would never have bet on that. I planted a few
things yesterday so we are almost back to normal. A few more days and the
    cleanup will be complete.

  4. Thanks Donald! When I first heard about Gustav, you were one of the first
people I thought of! I sure was sorry to see its effect on your garden! I
am sure you will recover though. – Mark

  5. Wonderful video with some great tips! Really makes we want to try to grow
    sweet potatoes…love them!

  6. cool that’s a good tip; leaving them out for the skin to toughen for better
    storage. thanks, didn’t know that.

  7. Thanks! When will we see your garden at your new place???

  8. after their skin toughens, I’ll store them in our basement (and hopefully
not forget about them). The sprouts I used to start this year’s sweet
potatoes were from 2 year old sweet potatoes I had forgotten about (ooops!)

  9. @bigfatcahoonas Thanks! That is pretty impressive about your parsnips. I
tried them once without much success. Perhaps it is time to try them again!
    :) – Mark

  10. heehee! yes of course it does!

  11. get a gun, shoot the squirrel, enjoy the extra meat

  12. Another great video Mark, with outstanding tips and information. Hopefully
your first frost will be late this year …… Donald

  13. yes but usually is not just one squirrel, its a bunch of squirrels!!

  14. @markhess I realized you said you were planting parsnip in fall, we always
plant in spring and harvest in autumn to winter, a frost on parsnips might
improve flavor but they have to be fully grow for this and they are quite a
long crop. I’m not sure that you wouldn’t be better planting in early
spring, they take an age to germinate as well. Also there’s not much
evidence to show that the flavor is better with a frost and they taste
beautiful fresh from the ground frost or not.

  15. Oh my goodness!! your sweet potatoes are incredible!! Giving me motivation
to go ahead and start my fall garden!!!

  16. oh, I have considered it!!

  17. @popoandtiger that would probably work fine! You might use flowing row
covers or another type mesh to cover the fruit; they would probably hold up
better after a rain – Mark
