Question by Lepke: Can you substitute green tomatoes for tomatillos in recipes?
I still have a ton of green tomatoes on my tomato plants and it’s not likely that they will ripen since the weather is cooling rapidly. I wanted to use them in some kind of recipe (not fried green tomatoes, though) and was wondering if I could use green tomatoes in recipes that call for tomatillos. I know that they are not the same, but isn’t their flavor similar? What kind of adjustment would I have to make to the recipe to make this work?

In my opinion tomatillos don’t have the same sharpness a green tomato has. I’ve have fried green tomatillos and they lacked flavor and body.

If you put your tomatoes in the window they will ripen just fine. In our community we donate our excess garden vegetables to our local food shelter. Perhaps there is one in your area too.
