Question by Katie: What types of plants do well in containers?
Hi all, I am looking to start a container vegetable garden. The containers I will be getting are probably 3 feet long and a foot across. I’m not 100% sure how deep, though; probably about 6 inches.
I want to grow tomatoes and some herbs, but do you have any other suggestions? I’d like to do strawberries as well, but I’m not sure how they would do in containers.
I know that I will have to get stakes for the tomatoes. Will I be able to bring the plants inside for the winter without them dying? Do any types of plants thrive in containers?
I’m a beginner gardener, so if you have any advice about gardening in containers, that would be fantastic.
Thank you!
Oh, and how many plants can I plant in each pot?

You are not providing enough soil depth for the roots to grow down.
Tomato’s require at least a 5 gallon pot with a depth of 18 inches. A ten gallon or bottom half of a barrel would do even better. One Tomato plant per pot.
Tomato’s live one year and then die. You would need to start a new plant to winter over.
Most herbs can survive in a one gallon pot with 12 inch soil depth.
