Question by Claire B.: Should I grow raspberries or blackberries in my garden?
Every spring my family and I grow a garden. It’s a pretty small garden- probably only 10×10 (feet). It also doesn’t have amazing soil- it’s not that fertilized and it’s got lots of clay in it, but we still get pretty good vegetation from it. We’ve grown tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries from it before.

This year we are planning on growing tomatoes, zuchinni and one fruit: either raspberries or blackberries. Based on what I’ve given (oh yeah, and btw the temperatures most of the time they’ll be growing will be between 75ish and 95ish), what do you think would be better. Please tell why. Thanks!

  1. I’d pick raspberries because of the temp and because they are more delicious.

I have clay soil too. Improve it! Dig in tons of compost and add SHARP sand. (Horticultural sand only!!!) Use lime to adjust the pH and dig in fertilizers. It sounds like a lot, but it doesn’t take long, and it will vastly improve your yield. You know what they say, a penny for the plant, a £ for the soil.

    Good luck!

  2. Blackberries make good additions to the home garden. Several types of blackberries are available.

  3. Both raspberries and blackberries will take up quite a bit of room and you won’t get any fruit until next year — they bear fruit on the stems that grew the previous year.

You can get large amounts of excellent fruit from either type. It depends what you like. Rasps are quite expensive in the stores and are delicious so I would go that way, but it is a matter of preference. If you grow blackberries, choose a thornless type.

Whatever you grow you will probably need to protect them from birds using netting. Birds like berries as much as I do.

  4. neither as both of them take up too much room and in my opinion are not worth the trouble fighting the birds and weather.

  5. Hi!
Our family has grown raspberries for many years. We used to sell them at a roadside stand.
Raspberries are very easy to grow.

Everything RASPBERRY! Decide for yourself, after you read how easy they are to grow.:)

If you want, you can also just grow the raspberry canes/bushes along a fence-line or a deck. They do not have to be specifically in a garden plot.
We used to sell the plants too, and many people said they did not even have a specific garden, but they were going to use them for a privy hedge.

    Enjoy your garden!

  6. not blackberries.invasive. nearly impossible to get rid of later…
