I love tomatillo sauce and fried green tomatoes. But are green tomatoes just red tomatoes that aren’t ripe yet?

Fried green tomatoes are unripe red tomatoes. Tomatillos aren’t tomatoes but they are related. There are unusual varieties of tomatoes that are green when ripe though.

Yes they are. They do have a different taste, most delicious, but different in taste to tomatillos. I make a simple green tomato soup that is served cold. You may also layer them after frying with some cheese and white beans for a yummy, nutritious and filling casserole. Place buttered, seasoned breadcrumbs on top of the casserole half way through baking. Drop biscuits on top is another option. I like them best served at room temperature if they are fried or in the above casserole. I find their delicious flavor most pronounced at that temperature. i picked about 50 green tomato’s right before a freeze. covered them up and left them alone except to check once a week. all turned red and are better than anything you can buy in the market this time of year.
Green tomatoes are unripened red tomatoes, not another variety or species.
Tomatillos are NOT related to tomatoes at all, they are related to gooseberries.
