Question by Sushi C: Why are tomatoes considered fruits?
My friends and I had a discussion about tomatoes and I was wondering why they call a tomato a fruit. Some people said because it has seeds but cucumbers have seeds too, and they’re not fruit.

Scientifically, both tomatoes and cucumbers are fruits due to their seeds and growth from flowering plants. When not scientifically speaking, a tomato can be considered a vegetable because of the culinary definition. So both sides are right depending on what definition y’all are considering correct.

I could answer but for a more prestigious and coherent answer here is a one I copied and pasted-The confusion about ‘fruit’ and ‘vegetable’ arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a ‘fruit’, though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example. As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits may be called ‘vegetables’ because they are used in savory rather than sweet cooking. The tomato, though technically a fruit, is often used as a vegetable, and a bean pod is also technically a fruit. The term ‘vegetable’ is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term ‘fruit’ may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example. So a tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, but can be used as a vegetable in cooking.
In the United States tomatoes are vegetables due to a Supreme Court decision in 1893; http://indianapublicmedia.org/amomentofscience/the-great-tomato-debate/
Although Leo…makes no sense at all, the other 2 answerer’s are correct. Unless you are a citizen of the U.S.A.
That’s a grape question, don’t go bananas thinking about it.
Botanically, the part of the plant that contains the seed is a fruit….the part that is the result of a pollinated blossom.
Veggies include various plant parts…leaf, stalk, roots…
Regarding the reference to a Supreme Court ruling…..the court did declare tomatoes a veggie due to restrictions in interstate commerce here in the States. Back then veggies could be transported across state lines unrestricted…not so for fruits. Hence the court ruling.
BTW…tomatoes are a member of the berry family.
Hope this helps.
It’s a terminology. It’s technically not a fruit but a vegetable. Fruits come off trees and I would put the tomato in the class of vegetable since it’s an annual plant. Whether Answers can solve this question is doubtful, since people will always contend with each other. I’m just as happy to call it a fruit but it will grow in my vegetable garden.
veg are edible plants, fruit are plants with seeds in them
