Question by Dr. G: When do I pick my home grown tomatoes?
It is my first time growing tomatoes. I am using a topsy-turvy and I have about 10 little green tomatoes about the size of a marble. Actually, some of them are turning red but I don’t want small tomatoes; I want big tomatoes. I am growing two varieties. I am not sure what they are but I think one is heirloom. How do I know when to pick them? PS. I am in Houston; I don’t know if that influences the answer.
Thanks!

If the little tomatoes are turning red, they are cherry tomatoes. They will be ready when they are very red. They will not grow bigger. They are very good and cost a lot to buy. There are over 600 heirloom tomatoes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/heirloom_tomato

once they start to turn red they are as big as they will get…once you see a color change you can pick them if you want, but will have to let them finish ripening inside. You can wait till they are totally ripe before picking, but you are taking a chance that a pest of some sort may decide to help itself to the tomato before you get to it and there will be no difference in taste if you let it ripen on the vine or ripen on a kitchen counter.
