I don’t have the puree at the house and was wondering if tomato soup would do the same thing…or maybe pasta sauce?

You could if that’s all you had! I substitute stuff all the time… Let me look for a recipe like that.. be back….
Here is one: it calls for cloves guess that adds a little zing. I’d taste it an add some cumin n chili and stuff, to make it moe mexicanny.
4 slices of bacon
1 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
2 10 1/2 of 11 ounce cans condensed tomato soup
1/2 cup rice
1/2 cup water
4 whole cloves
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp salt.
Cut bacon in small pieces, fry until crisp in heavy skillet; remove bacon.
Cook onion and green pepper in bacon fat until golden. Add remaining ingredients; cover tightly and cook slowly 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Remove cloves and bay leaf; sprinkle crisp bacon over top. Makes 5 or 6 servings.
This one calls for 1/2 can of soup n half can of tomato sauce, guess you could use diluted tomato paste, or chop some tomatoes in it.
1/2 c vegetable oil
1/2 medium pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1/2 lb. ground beef or turkey
1 1/2 c. minute rice
1 1/4 c. water
1 (8 oz) can of tomato sauce
1/2 can of tomato soup
1 tsp salt
1 tsp. yellow mustard
dash of pepper
Directions
Heat oil in skillet. Add onions, peppers, beef, and rice.
Stir over high heat until browned.
Add remaining ingredients.
Mix well.
Bring to a 5 minuteboil quickly.
Simmer, uncovered .
