Question by getamazed: How can I get skunk smell off a dog that’s already been bathed?
My dog was sprayed by a skunk last week, and I bathed him in tomato juice, then took him to the groomer, but there is still a little residual smell left in his coat. He’s a big dog with a long coat, and I’d rather not have to bathe him again, but aside from tomato juice, hydrogen peroxide/soap/lemon juice, or another bath, is there anything that could help eliminate the odor?
Thanks!

nope. sorry. Try Apple Cider Vinegar. I know, it’s another bath, but It might actually work.
What do you think? Answer below!
I’m sorry, but tomato juice only covers the smell, it doesn’t elimiate it.
Go to google.com and type in ‘dog sprayed by a skunk recipe’ and use the one that is based on peroxide and baking soda. THAT one actually takes the smell out of the dog. Soap can’t do it (the grease is not the right type that soap can break up), tomato juice can’t do it (it’s not eliminating the odor) and lemon juice can’t do it (acidics alone can’t break up skunk smell).
Your vet also has a fluid you can use to bathe the dog in, but the peroxide recipe online works fine.
does your dog have long or short hair? my dad’s pit mix got sprayed and he poured luke warm coffee and rubbed coffee grinds all over her… waited about 20 minutes and rinsed her off. the smell was completely gone. If he’s long haired then that will be much harder i think, maybe add a few drops of tea tree or lavender into a spray bottle full of water and give him a good spritz. make sure its not too concentrated though, you dont want to irritate his nose!
i really dont know i guess you can shave the dog then you can u know bathe him in more tomatoe juice then rinse him off then bathe him
Billy Mays here with a radical new odour removing agent; OXY CLEAN.
We used OXY CLEAN to clean up after an anal gland accident in our living room; the dog, not me. Two applications did the trick. I see no reason why it shouldn’t remove skunk odour too.
If I were you, I would go to the pet store and buy either like a spray, or wipes and just put that on your dog to cover up the smell a bit until it goes away. But for when you choose to give him another bath, we used this baking soda and dawn dish soap mixture and it really worked. What you do is mix a box (smaller size) of baking soda with most of a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, and add a couple of good squirts of Dawn dish soap liquid. Wet your dog and rub this mixture in all over. Allow it to remain on your dog at least five to ten minutes; then rinse thoroughly. It does a great job! Can’t use it as thoroughly on the face, but do the best you can.
Make a slurry of one quart 3% hydrogen peroxide, one cup baking soda, and one tablespoon liquid dish soap. Rinse the dog, apply the solution, work it through the hair and down to the skin, let it stay on the dog for five minutes and then rinse-rinse-rinse. Air dry the dog. Do not towel him off. I will put the wet dog in a crate and angle a fan towards him. This has never failed to take the odor off my dogs, but it will lighten the coat.
The link has a slightly different recipe of the same ingredients. I think the baking soda does more to remove the odor which is why I increase it when I need it.
