Question by Help.: Can you use this grow system to grow tomatos?
Hagen Plant Grow Natural System with CO2

The system is available through PetSmart, and is primarily used for aquatic plants, I think. However, I have heard of some people using this system to grow fruits and vegetables. Could this be used to grow tomatoes?

  1. I water them when the soil dries out.

  2. how often do you water your plants

  3. Tomatoe plants smell like pine trees to me, such a great smell :3

  4. do you have a how to video on your lamp? it’s a great idea and I would like to build one! thanks :)

  5. The size of the pot will be ok if you keep them pruned back to not allow extreme growth. The more they grow, the more they will push down more roots to support the added growth. As far as watering I don’t suggest a time table. I keep the plant slightly moist at all times. If you allow the soil to dry before watering while it’s producing fruit you may get a condition on the fruit called blossom end rot. Watch your water and do what you can to ensure slightly moist soil. Good luck! :)

  6. 2. Two tomato containers are on the window edge above the radiator. The containers are warmer than those not above the radiator but not hot or anything like that. Not even very warm. Plants after one week don’t seem to mind it – they look OK.
    3. How frequent should I water. Now I do it 2-3 times a week. I can pour 2L of water per container and won’t even drip in the dish. Isn’t that too much?

Maybe I post a video of them so you see what I got. They make me happy. Especially their smell :)

  7. Now the questions part:
    1. I have 2 or 3 tomatoes in a pot (same size as your big one). I think it’s 15 or 20 liter (they have 20L worth of soil in them though). Is that enough? Kinda don’t want to have to buy bigger ones. Peppers are in smaller containers of 10L probably (about 15L soil). 2 pepper plants/container.

  8. Had the seedlings in an improvised grow box with a 20W CFL (100W equivalent). Initially the peppers looked kinda light green, but now look dark and nice. Only thing I notice is that at least tomatoes are thinner than in the garden. And weaker, more flexible. But not really a problem. Now I have them on a south facing window. The leafs “kiss” the window looking for the light. When seedlings I used aluminium foil reflectors but now they’re kinda big for that so they completely face the window.

  9. Keep up the good job. You inspire people!

I planted my seeds (1 determinate and 2 indeterminate tomato hairlooms and 1 type of pepper) at the end of january. A week ago I transplanted in bigger pots (about the size of your big one in the vid, just square and shorter). They have gotten so big before transplant that the roots were all over the small bag (had no seedling containers so used some regular small plastic bags tied with scotch tape). McGiver style :)

  10. Thanks, great video, I am going to try to grow tomatoes in my small apartment :)

  11. I have screens on my windows to keep most bugs out. Sometimes aphids or spider mites find their way in on the dog or my clothes and that’s unavoidable. If the plants get bugs I just deal with it as it happens. It’s all a part of growing indoors. It happens sometimes.

  12. How do you keep all the bugs away from the plants while they are in your home? Also, how do you keep the bugs out of your home? For instance, don’t these plants attract them into your home?

  13. Cool!

  14. Good video! Liked it a lot. Been looking for viseos on plants grown indoors and most videos have little info and nothing exciting to see. So far yours is the best thanks.

  15. make dolma with the grape leaves!! soo good!

  16. Your vids really helped me mate. I was pissed I’d have to buy expensive HID/HPS lights and run at 400W or more, get big bills etc. Now after seeing the practical aspects from your vids, I’m quite confident I can grow a few tomatoes on the cheap.

  17. Thanks! I have been an avid outside vegetable Gardner for over 10 years. This year I am trying to grow veggies indoors. The videos are helpful!

  18. I have one of those “patio tomato” plants that I have reproduced from seed for years and it grows true every time. I originally bought one and it reseeded itself, so I let the plants grow to see what would happen. All the plants produced and grew like the parent, so I have saved the seeds and replanted each year for about 10 years now. I use Azomite and it has improved my garden greatly.

  19. i have had absolutely incredible results from using Rock Dust. it adds trace minerals into the soil, and i have found that i also makes the produce taste far better when grown with rock dust. Either azomite or gaia green glacial rock dust are the only two decent brands that I have been able to find and had experience with

  20. I do my best to reply to every question and email. It can be quite an undertaking but I actually enjoy the heck out of it. :)

  21. thanks for the tip, and all the other great tips! it’s so refreshing how interactive you are with your viewers. I really appreciate that and your enthusiasm is so contagious. did you know that?

  22. I’ve only grown the elephant ears outdoors because they seem to spread waaaay too much for indoor growing. :) I suggest as much light as possible with a well balanced fertilizer and huge pot. They seem to appreciate a slight drying between waterings but not too much. This is just from what I’ve noticed and has nothing to do with anything I’ve read.

  23. Hi Ray, have you ever grown eddoe or taro? I’ve seen elephant ears in your garden, but I was thinking about indoor taro. any tips?
