Question by Mary: What is the best dry food for a male cat that throws up hairballs?
He is a small cat and he upchucks a lot of hairballs. I thought there was some dry cat food for cats that helps them pass the hairballs instead of throwing them up. I brush him everyday since he grooms himself a lot during the day.

Science Diet makes a hairball formula, as do other manufacturers. Go to a PetSmart store if there’s one nearby, and ask them what they recommend.
You can also get a hairball laxative that you can give to your cat periodically. I’ve seen some that is in a tube much like toothpaste. Squeeze a bit on to your cat’s front leg and rub it into the fur, so he has to lick it off. It helps him pass hairballs instead of upchucking them.

Well, just so you know, give sun-dried tomatoes a try (maybe from someone
else’s plate, for you not to spend a dime), they taste very different from
the regular tomatoes. In case you don’t like that or don’t think is worth
it, artichokes come to my mind 😉

I can say from personal experience that the Science Diet Hairball Food definitely works. It comes in either adult or mature adult varieties, so you can choose whichever is age appropriate for your cat. It is a no brainer to go with the food…..no extra steps involved.
Laxatone, the hairball remedy, is very messy and shouldn’t be given at the same time as food, otherwise it will scoot it through along with the hairballs and you kitty will get NO nutrition!
Hairballs can be managed by feeding a diet high in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids as this promotes skin and coat health. This translates into less shedding, and thus less hair ingested during self grooming.
I would recommend a food like Max Cat Indoor. This company is the only one that actually guarantees an improvement in skin and coat which helps with the hair balls. This formula also contains oat fiber, tomato pomace and rice as fiber sources that help the hair pass through the digestive tract.
