Well most tomato starter plants bought in stores are hybrid. They tend to lose some of the “heirloom” acidity that makes home grown tomatoes so good.. The best bet would be to find an independent farmer to buy your plants and tomatoes from.

  1. all red tomatos are pretty high in acidity. Yellow tomatos are the low acid ones.

maybe it was a beef steak tomato?

  2. any good garden center will have “heirloom” tomato’s this is what you want to get. they are what are called old fashioned tomato’s more susceptible to disease that hybrids, but have a much more tomato-e taste like we remember from the “old days”

  3. Yeah, the modern hybrids are developed to be sweet, AKA bland, and disease resistant. I grow all heirlooms, much better flavor. This site will give you an idea of all the different kinds of heirloom toms you can grow

  4. Check on heirlooms.com. They sell heirloom seeds of all types, along with descriptions of what the tomatoes look and taste like. From that you might be able to recognize the type or types, and either grow them from seed or call around and see if any specialty shops carry those types of tomatoes.

  5. Rutgers or Jersey tomatoes are particularly known for that old-fashoined, sharp flavor. The seeds are cheap and available everywhere (Rutgers is the original heirloom, before heirlooms were cool), but the plants are hard to find.
Better Boy takes a long time to grow but it has really nice, big, juicy, red, tomatoey-tasing tomatoes that I think are unsurpassed. The plants are available everywhere.
Green Zebra is an heirloom that tastes pretty acidic. But a lot of the heirlooms are actually kind of low-acid, including Brandywine. They taste good, but they usually feature a lot of other flavors besides that zing that you’re looking for. It’s usually hard to find a specific heirloom except at specialty nurseries.
Just about anything fresh off the vine is going to taste way better than what you buy at the supermarket. But if you are looking to buy something from the store, those Campari tomatoes have more of a “garden fresh” taste and texture than anything else. You can’t buy seed for Campari yet, so don’t plan on growing them.
