Question by cassyanne: Should you cut the top off tomatoes?
When preparing tomatoes for a sandwich/salad (or whatever), do you cut the tops off to remove the bit where it had joined to the vine, or do you leave them on? Should you do it one way for cherry/plum tomatoes and another for big salad tomatoes? Just curious…

  1. You take the little core out that the stem is on by running a knife around it and pulling it out.

  2. For sandwich size tomatoes, I simply core the green top and then slice as usual. On Roma’s, I carefully slice just the little green part, and for cherry’s, I don’t bother.

  3. You should always cut it : )

  4. For large tomatoes (beefsteak, etc), I generally cut around the stem and remove it, as it tends to be tough and woody. For plum tomatoes, I will just take a quick slice off the top to get rid of the tiny stem end. Cherry and grape tomatoes I generally don’t worry about, as what little stem is left isn’t enough to make a difference in texture or taste.

  5. Yes I always cut the top off and a little bit of the bottom too.

  6. Yes core them. That part is hard to chew.

For a roma and anything small dont worry about it.
