Question by : How and when do I mulch my tomato plants?
Do I put the mulch right at the base of the tomato plants stems or should the mulch not touch the tomatoes to prevent it from heating up and burning the plant? Also can I put mulch when we are in a rainy period with temperatures from 60-70 degrees or should I wait until the soil heats up so the mulch can retain the heat?

With tomatoes it is best not to introduce too much moisture. You will be opening up your plants to blight or places where tomato worms can reproduce next year. If you mulch with straw or something totally inert that will not build fungus or give pests a place to reproduce at the base of the plant you might notice a gain in retaining irrigated water. Depending on the hybrid you are planting should also determine if you mulch or not. Tomatoes were originally a plant that grew as a vine along the ground, not a plant that grew vertically on posts, so replicating a condition that makes the plant fight gravity like it normally would have usually gives them the best chances. That said, tomatoes should not need mulch at all, just good balanced soil that properly retains moisture on its own.

i really enjoy your videos – i find them very helpful
Thanks! So far 70 of them have made it after transplanting. Hopefully they all make it till I can put them in the ground. I got my seed trays online. Last year I got some from Vesey’s, they were more expensive but thicker and better quality than the ones I have now.
Thanks! :)
Wow– you’ve got a lot of tomatoes! How many plants are you going to keep? I like your seed trays. Where did you get them?
Wow! What a great selection and I love your color-coding system. You are going to have such a great tomato harvest
haha. I beat ya to it. So far so good, as they have already started coming up.
Thanks for watching! They have already started sprouting, and I am super happy about that.
Thanks for watching.
haha. That would be interesting, a talking tomato.
Thanks a lot! I am looking forward to seeing how they all produce.
Great idea on your sticks! Lot of varieties. You are off to a great start!!
How disappointing from the video title I thought you had a new tomato that can talk. LOL Wow that is a lot of different varieties it will be fun to see what they all look like and how well they grow.
that was your 100th video congrats!
I am impressed! 2 varieties for me. I planted Brandywine 2 years ago and I could hide behind just one and it was 9 ft tall. I got very few tomatoes but they were divine. I never fed those monsters. Can’t wait to see more!
aw shoot you explained about the sticks there goes my question of either a mini grave yard or what type of sticks your growing? 😉 Good luck with 100% germination and great growing season
