Question by Curly: What is the best way to get rid of fruit flies?
It’s canning season at my house, which means fruit flies. My parents can peaches, apple sauce, pears, tomato soup, grape juice, etc., depending on what they can get for a good price. That means the dreaded fruit flies. I’ve googled plenty of methods of extermination, the most popular being apple cider vinegar. My nine year old sister likes eating tomatoes like apples sometimes. The other day she put part of a tomato in the garbage can in my bathroom. When I saw that I should have changed the bag, I know, and I regret it. The fruit flies in my bathroom are so bad now! They mainly stayed in the garbage can, and it was yucky but usually they just go away after a while. So while I was googleing ways to get rid of them, I saw some posts that said they are attracted to toothpaste. Some people said the flies were congregating around their toothbrushes. Crud. So I rescued my toothbrush, and toothpaste for good measure.
Anyway, with every method I found, someone said it didn’t work at all, some said it kind of worked, others said it was amazing. So if you could post what you’ve tried that has worked that would be great. If someone posted what you were going to say, I’d appreciate it if you would vote for theirs, and the one that is suggested the most I will use. Thanks!

Put cut or rotten fruit in a cup the put plastic wrap over it and poke a few small holes( Half of a millimeter is fine)then glue or staple the plastic to the cup . Put the cup in a place where the fruit flies are there the most. When one gets in the all will!:) This totally reduced my fruit fly problem!

  1. With such a short life cycle, just getting rid of the open fruit should do wonders. This means nothing open to the air. Or keep the fruit in the garage, out of the house until canning.

Many insects are attracted to bright yellow color……..you can buy insect traps this color or make your own, find something bright yellow………margarine containers for example, smear some Vaseline on them…doesn’t have to be too thick…and see if they are attracted to it and get stuck.

There are drain gnats that many people call fruit flies…….that live and breed on in the drains. This can be killed by pouring something like PineSol down each drain……at least 4 ounces, close the drain….and probably leave the house for a few hours..it gets stinky. When you come back, pour very hot water down each drain.

But since your house his canning………they probably are fruit flies.

  2. Plastic baggies with some fruit in them and half sealed up will attract and trap them. Easy to seal up and throw away.

  3. Be very careful once the house gets infested by fruit flies.
We had tough time and went though a real hard work to get these nasty bugs off our kitchen and home.
You have to be patient, as they won’t leave the house overnight. But they will eventually die out with these techniques.
Please follow very closely the cleaning techniques and homemade traps tips mentioned below.
