Question by Troy D: Fried Green tomatoes?
How “ripe” do green tomatoes have to be before you can fry them up, or does it matter??? We have some “big boy” reds and “Yellow boy” Yellows that are just under baseball size right now. Are they good???

they are fine but not too sure about those red tomaters
Fried green tomatoes are that—green. When they get as large as they are going to get before turning, that’s the time. Last year we had an overage of cherry tomatoes when the first frost came so we picked them to fry. We just cut them in half and they made great “poppers”.
They must be GREEN … that is ‘unripe.’ Slice them, dip them into flour, then into a mixture of egg and milk, and then into breading or more flour. Fry in a fry pan at medium high until ‘brown’ and enjoy. I don’t have any tomato plants and I wish I could come to dinner at your house and fix them for you, because then I would get to taste them. I made fried green tomatoes for my now husband the second time he came to my apartment as a friend … we’ve now been married 11+ years and I haven’t had any fried green tomatoes since! SUPER BUMMER … enjoy them for me, okay?
Try using cornmeal instead of flour to coat the tomatoes with after dipping in beaten egg, they will be less likely to get soggy. You can also mix cornmeal with your flour. And you must say “fried green tamaters.” Enjoy!
your tomatoes need to be firmly green. If they have started to get color on them, wait a few days and make salsa
slice your tomatoes about 1/4 inch thin and lightly salt them, this will draw the extra liquid from them.
meanwhile beat one egg with 1 tbls water,
in a sep bowl mix garlic powder, flour, and cornmeal with salt and pepper to taste.
blot tomatoes with a paper towel and coat with flour (lightly)
then dip in egg and cover with flour cornmeal mixture
Heat a skillet on medium high and add olive oil
when hot fry your tomatoes until crispy and brown on both sides
serve with ranch dressing as a dip or
you can mix dill with sour cream and make a lovely dip or spread for them
They need to be green and still rather hard to be able to fry them up. Ripe tomatoes are just too soft and juicy.
I have a full photo tutorial on my website of how to make fried green tomatoes step by step!
