Question by Intel+nVidia!: Are regular incandescent bulbs good for growing tomatoes indoors?
I bought a tomato plant today and its sitting on my window ledge, i dont have anywhere for it to get under the sun so i was wondering if a lamp would be useful, not for the heat as my room is warm anyway.
OK so I understand that incandescent bulbs give off one end of the spectrum, red… so what if i put my desk lamp and a fluorescent tube pointing at the plants?

No to incandescent. Best option is LED grow lights like from this website: http://www.homegrownlights.com/
“Standard incandescent light bulbs produce some light but do have the full spectrum of red and blue rays that [plants] need. Fluorescent light bulbs do produce a better range of rays but are still not the best choice for plants. Grow lights that are specifically made for indoor plant growth are the best choice for fast growing and healthy plants. These lights will provide all of the necessary spectrums of light that the plants need for photosynthesis. If plants do not receive the necessary light they will die.”

Think of it like this, Plants need Lots of light B&C.
Incandescent give off Lots of light A and tiny bit of B and a tiny bit of C.
Flourescent give of Lots of light A, a medium amount of light B and a tiny bit of light C.
No matter what combination you use, the plants still arent getting enough Light B & C. Unless you put like 10 lights on just 1 plant, you may aswell get a grow light.
