Question by gentlebendustypaws: Is there an alternative to tomato paste?
I have a recipe that calls for a teaspoon of tomato paste. I don’t have an opportunity to cook that often, therefore, I don’t want to waste a whole can of tomato paste just for this one recipe. Could there possibly be an alternative so I don’t waste the can of tomato paste?

  1. You can freeze tomatoe paste! When you open a can the rest doesn’t have to go to waste. Just take spoonfuls of paste and put them on a cookie sheet and freeze. Once they are frozen put them in a ziplock bag and stick in the freezer.

  2. you can use tomato passatta or tomatoes but since tomato paste is very concentrated then you have to use more than a teaspoon.

  3. You probably could substitute something. But the taste won’t be the same. I really like the flavor of paste. It’s a flavor you can’t get in sauce or puree. Freeze the leftover like the second answer recommends.

  4. Buy the smallest can you are able to find, use what you need for the recipe. Then put teaspoons of paste in small zip lock bags and freeze them. You’ll have what you need to make the recipe several times and no waste.

You can do the same thing with onions and fresh herbs. I hate paying so much for a bundle of something when I just need a few sprigs. I put it in the amounts I usually need between sheets of wax paper and put them in a freezer bag. They thaw in no time and taste better than dried herbs.
